POSITION AVAILABLE Resident Tutor A Better Chance ("ABC") Masconomet, Inc. PROGRAM SUMMARY ABC Masconomet (located in Topsfield, MA) is a residential educational program serving motivated minority students. This program serves young men from underresourced urban schools in the Northeast (currently from New York and Massachusetts) that come to attend Masconomet Regional High School in order to pursue postsecondary education and improve the opportunities available to them. The program’s staff consists of a Resident Director and Resident Tutor (both residential), with subject-specific tutors as necessary. Working as a team, the program helps the students by providing a supportive, structured, “family-like” atmosphere in which they can feel comfortable and at home, as well as excel academically. POSITION SUMMARY - The Resident Tutor is responsible for the general supervision of the scholars’ academic progress. All students are required to maintain a “B” average; any who fall below are subject to dismissal from the program. This is evaluated on a case-by-case basis. - The Resident Tutor reports to both the Resident Director and the Director of Academic Achievement (Executive position within the Board of Directors) and coordinates with Academic Advisors. - The Resident Tutor is responsible for daily study hall, held evenings, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 7 – 10 pm . - The Resident Tutor supports and assists students as necessary and maintains a quiet, structured environment conducive to study. - The Resident Tutor reports all concerns about the boys’ academic progress to the Board of Directors through the Director of Academic Achievement. - During the first few weeks of school, tutors may need to work extra hours to ensure that scholars, especially freshmen, are setting appropriate goals and behavior patterns regarding organization, studying and meetings with teachers. - The Resident Tutor closely monitors each student’s academic progress and needs, corresponding with teachers, guidance staff and community members to enlist additional support where needed. - The Resident Tutor provides general assistance to the Resident Director in maintaining the routines, cleanliness and order of the household. This includes general supervision of the students on a rotating basis. - The Resident Tutor is present for at least two evening meals per week with the Resident Director and Scholars. - The Resident Tutor shall attend at and assist with various ABC Masco events such as the Bike-a-thon, Strawberry Festival, Christmas Party and Graduation Barbecue. - The Resident Tutor shall serve as back-up in the event that the Resident Director must be away (emergencies only). - The Resident Tutor shall maintain an appropriate standard of behavior. The use of drugs and alcohol on the premises is strictly prohibited. - The Resident Tutor, above all, demonstrates a strong commitment to the academic and personal success of ABC Masco’s scholars. This includes superior, productive communication skills (including the ability to facilitate such communication) as well as the ability to forge strong working relationships with each student that contributes to their overall success. REQUIREMENTS - Bachelor’s degree. - Demonstrated commitment to education and/or youth development, specifically the beliefs that: gifted students should be challenged to reach their maximum potential and all students can (and will) achieve, given the appropriate, suitable support. - Ability to exercise authority and maintain discipline with compassion and consistency in residential setting with six to eight adolescent males. - Patience, maturity, flexibility, good judgment, energy, enthusiasm, and a sense of humor. - Subject expertise in English, math and/or science preferred. COMPENSATION The Resident Tutor is provided with free living quarters during the entire calendar year and free board during the academic year (September – June).
